Hi everyone, this is my First Blog to inculcate what I have studied in my electrical machines curriculum in a easy manner. Lets get into the topic.......
Every electrical machines have definitely some causes which is responsible for losses, poor power factor and lower efficiency. Now I am going to deal with the major problem in DC machines and Synchronous Machines ,which is nothing but Armature Reaction.
What is armature reaction?
- The effect of armature conductor flux in the Main field flux is called as Armature reaction.
- This Armature reaction is simply illustrated by the following diagram for better understand.
What are all the effects of armature reaction?
- Effect of main field flux which causes reduction in induced EMF (in case of DC generator).
- Sparking at the brushes which intern causes heavy brush losses.
- Heating of the machine.
- Armature conductor flux is directly proportional to the current applied to it. Therefore, current increases armature flux increases.
Methods to reduce armature reaction:
- Brush shifting along with the resultant flux.
- Compensating winding placed in the pole shoe to nullify the armature flux.
- Placing Interpoles across the brushes( Mostly Adopted Method).
